Abstract

The objective of the study was to analyse the efficacy and safety of 0.4mg Tamsulosin once daily in patients with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) treated for 4 weeks. A Prospective observational study of 42 men who all are newly diagnosed with BPH. Maximum Urinary flow Rate (Qmax), Voided Volume were measured as parameters for assessment at the beginning and after 1 month of therapy. International Prostate Symptom Score and Quality of Life were assessed before therapy, after 48 hrs and after 1 month of therapy.The mean age of patients ranged from 50-88 years. There was a sustained and Significant Improvement inInternational prostate symptom score (IPSS)and Quality of Life(QOL) in all patient groups during the study. The increase in maximum urine flow from baseline was observed to be 1.5 to3.5ml/sec. orthostatic hypotension was reported significantly more often in 38 patients (90.40%) thandizziness (42.50%), fatigue and headache ranging 37.50% respectively. None of the patients discontinued the drug due to side- effects. Tamsulosin is a selective drug of choice for the treatment of BPH. It is well tolerated and reduces the symptoms.
