Abstract

The biopolymer Chitosan have immense structural possibilities for chemical and mechanical modifications to generate novel properties, functions and applications due to the presence of highly reactive OH and NH functional groups. Thus, in the present study Chitosan was modified into Chitosan Schiff base (CSB) using salicylaldehyde and to improve the properties of Chitosan Schiff base another polymer polyethylene glycol was added to form chitosan Schiff base/polyethylene glycol (CSB/PEG) blend. The prepared blend was characterized by FTIR, XRD and SEM studies, porosity, water uptake and retention measurements. The structure and physical properties were analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). XRD and SEM results show that the material was amorphous in nature. The porosity and water uptake and retention measurements confirmed that the prepared material has amorphous nature with many voids.
