Synthesis, Characterization and Antimicrobial activity of chitosan vanillin Schiff base

Abstract

A polymer (Greek poly-, "many" + -mer, "parts") is a large molecule, or macromolecule, composed of many repeated subunits. Biopolymers are polymers that are biodegradable. In recent years, biodegradable polymers have attracted attention to be used as biomaterials particularly, for tissue engineering, gene therapy, wound healing and controlled drug delivery system. In the present work, Schiff base was prepared by reacting chitosan with vanillin. The derivative was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, TGA, DSC, XRD and SEM and tested towards the cell uptake. The uncross linked chitosan Schiff base derivative was studied for their antimicrobial activities.
