Abstract

The plant Plumeria acutifolia Poir, fragimpani tree, was rich source of alkaloids, terpenoids, glycosides and tannins. Traditionally it was used in the treatment of allergies, inflammation, in the treatment of leprosy, ascites, and used as carminative, diuretic and laxative. The present study investigated the pharmacognostical characters on Plumeria acutifolia. Poir root bark. Some diagnostic characters of the root bark were the presence of both collapsed and noncollapsed phloem, druses and latex containing vessels. The powder microscopical studies revealed the presence of scattered parenchyma cells, both brachy and fibre sclereids, laticiferous tubes and starch grains. The physico chemical parameters, phytochemical analysis and estimation of phytoconstituents for the total ethanol extract of the root bark were determined as per the standard procedures.
