Abstract

Plants belonging to family Zingiberaceae play an important role in terms of both socio-economic and culture of Manipur. A potential barcoding gene, matK could be used to establish the evolutionary relationship and constructing the phylogenetic tree of the plants belonging to this family. The matK gene sequence have been obtained from GeneBank and used for the analysis. Sequence alignments were performed using ClustalW, and phylogenetic analysis were carried out by PHYLIP package. The result indicates that five important genera, viz. Alpinia, Boesenbergia, Curcuma, Hedychium and Kaempferia show polyphylogeny. Phylogenetic tree was constructed in this analysis.
