FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF SECNIDAZOLE COLON TARGETING DRUG LAYERED PELLETS

Abstract

Secnidazole is a 5-Nitroimidazole derivative, effectively used in the treatment of Amoebiasis. The main objective of this work is formulation of Secnidazole pellets by using powder layering technique. Secnidazole drug easily get degraded in the gastric pH. For the treatment of Intestinal Amoebiasis the drug should be protected from the gastric environment and is also targeted to the colon for effective treatment. Targeting of drug to the colon can be effectively done by using polymers such as Eudragit RSPO, Eudragit L100, Eudragit RL 100, Eudragit RS 100. By using 5% and 10 % of above mentioned 4 polymers, 8 formulations are made. Evaluation of prepared pellets can be performed by using parameters such as angle of repose, bulk density, carr’s index, and percentage drug release. Among 8 formulations Eudragit RSPO 5 % has good percentage of release of 96.33 %.compatibility studies are performed by FT-IR.
