Abstract
This study was intended to evaluate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of an a methanolic extract of Justicia simplex D.Don (Family: Acanthaceae). The analgesic activity was studied in rats using hot plate and tail flick method. The Methanolic extract was administered orally at a dose of 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg using Diclofenac as a standard drug in both methods. The results showed that both the doses (200mg/Kg & 400mg/Kg) of methanolic extract showed significant analgesic activity. For the anti-inflammatory activities, the carrageenan induced oedema of the hindpaw of rats was used and the paw volume measured plethysmometrically. Aspirin 100mg/kg was used as a standard drug. The two doses of plant extract exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity. In conclusion Justicia simplex D.Don possesses analgesic and anti- inflammatory activities.
