Abstract

The present study was undertaken to investigate the anti-ulcer activity of aqueous extracts (250 & 500 mg/kg) of the leaves of Annonasquamosa in experimental animal models. The gastro protective activity was evaluated by ethanol induced and pylorus ligated (shay) rats in experimental animal. The effect of extract was compared with ranitidine (20 mg/kg bw) as the reference drug. The aqueous extract showed significant anti-ulcer activity (p<0.001) by decreasing gastric juice, pH, total acidity and ulcer index. Phytochemical screening of the extract re- vealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids and tannins. From these data it has been con- cluded that the aqueous extract of Annonasquamosashowed significant anti-ulcer effect due to presence of one or more active principle.
