Abstract

Hyperlipidemia is the greatest risk factor of coronary heart disease. Currently available hypolipidemic drugs have been associated with number of side effects. Herbal treatment for hyperlipidemia has less side effects and is rela- tively cheap and locally available. The present study was attempted to evaluate the antihyperlipidemic activity of methanolic extract of Artemisia vulgaris family Asteraceae (MAV) on high fat diet induced hyperlipidemia in rats. Methanolic extract of Artemisia vulgaris (MAV) was administrated at the dose of 250mg/kg as low dose and 500mg/kg as high dose and the result was assessed by the evaluating the lipid profile like cholesterol, triglyce- rides, LDL, HDL and by histopathological studies of liver. The present study indicates that the groups treated with methanolic extract of Artemisia vulgaris at 500mg/kg p.o. has decreased the elevated serum lipids like TG, choles- terol and LDL levels and it also increases the HDL levels significantly(p>0.001).
