Abstract

The chitosan based microspheres have been studied as controlled release device to deliver Naproxen Sodium (NS) in gastrointestinal tract. Mucoadhesive microspheres were prepared by a emulsification solvent evaporation me- thod followed by treating with tween-80 as surfactant, glutaraldehyde solutions as cross-linker. Upon cross-linking with glutaraldehyde, the resulting microspheres were found to be more efficient for prolonged drug release. The microspheres cross-linked with glutaraldehyde were able to control the release of the drug over 12 hours. The release of drug was controlled by the mechanism of the dissolution of NS in the dissolution medium and the diffu- sion of NS through the mucoadhesive microspheres.
