Abstract
The aim of the present study was to develop matrix tablets of Stavudine with the mucilage of Aloe barbadensis leaves and also to study the effect of fillers on the rate controlling polymer. The mucilage was extracted. Physico- chemical properties of dried powdered mucilage studied. Various formulations of Stavudine with Aloe barbadensis Miller leaves mucilage were prepared by non aqueous wet granulation technique using lactose and Dicalcium phosphate as fillers. The swelling behavior and in vitro release rate Characteristics were studied. The dissolution study proved that the dried Aloe barbadensis mucilage can be used as a matrix forming material. The formulation F5 containing aloe-lactose showed drug release for 12hrs with 98.85% drug release. The kinetics showed that it follows zero order kinetics and mechanism of drug release is non-fickian diffusion type. The stability studies proved that all the formulations were stable throughout the storage period.
