Abstract
Ipomoea batatas L. (Lam), is an important food crop in many countries, also cultivated for its use as animal feed and as a medicinal plant. The root is commonly known as sweet potato and has been used extensively in tradi- tional medicines for various ailments. The roots and skin of Ipomoea batatas contain high levels of polyphenols such as anthocyanins and phenolic acids and are a good source of vitamins A, B and C, iron, calcium and phospho- rus. Ipomoea batatas has been reported to possess anti oxidant, anti-diabetic, wound healing, anti-ulcer, anti- bacterial, and anti-mutagenic activities. It is also used as an immune booster and for relief of gastrointestinal and upper respiratory symptoms. The boiled roots of Ipomoea batatas are believed to relieve diarrhea, and crushed leaves are used to treat acne and boils. This review highlights the phytochemical and pharmacological aspects of Ipomoea batatas.
